Integration of Language and Content. The Future of Education?

Abstract

In order to promote language acquisition and multilingualism several European policy-driven strategies have been fostered in the last decades in education. One of the best known educational initiatives is what has been called Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL), an approach that refers to contexts where language is used as a medium for learning content, and the content is also used to learn languages. CLIL can be truly understood as an international approach for the integration of language and content in the curriculum as it is often part of international education. This presentation analyses how CLIL initiatives are implemented in educational contexts to increase second language competence. Recent research on multilingual education (Dalton Puffer, Nikula and Smit, 2010; Ruiz de Zarobe, Sierra and Gallardo del Puerto, 2011; Ruiz de Zarobe, 2013, among others) will be analysed to study the implications of these findings in relation to second language acquisition in education.
