Media Literacy of Primary School Students in Turkey

Abstract

Undoubtedly, media bring new orientations and opportunities for their users. So, this transforms individuals daily life like the ways of accessing information, immediate communication, having pleasure time, etc. On the other hand, when the media are used ineffectively these opportunities might be trouble for users. By the way, the major issue is using media effectively. In order to provide this, governments make policies and one of them is about providing media education. In Turkey, media literacy courses are given to primary school students. This is beneficial attempt to provide conscious media using, but the curriculum of the course is controversial. In this study, text books provided by the ministry of education are analyzed in terms of how degree of content is suitable for the purpose and children.  Media literacy in general and social media literacy in specific, the content of the books and media literacy levels of children are analyzed. So, this study has a quantitative frame and both content analysis and survey techniques are used together.
