The Effect of Gamification on Students’ Motivation in Flipped Learning

Abstract

Nowadays, flipped learning is becoming as a part of higher education and there are variety of reasons on why flipped classroom use in higher education settings.

One of them is that flipped learning can be useful where students’ interaction and participation are minimal such as large lecture courses. On the other hand there seems to be a consensus that gamification is the use of game mechanics in non-game contexts and it can provide powerful experiences, leveraging both motivation and engagement. In this study, the effect of gamification on motivation in flipped learning has been examined.

Experimental design was preferred in the research. The control group completed the process with flipped learning and the experimental group with gamification and flipped learning. Participants of the research were teacher candidates in one of the public university in Turkey.

In the process of experimental design, motivation scale was conducted, the results showed that the students’ motivation who used flipped learning approach with gamification were higher than control group students.
