Abstract

In educational setting the communication presents many challenges for both scientists and artists. The nature of these challenges is given particular clarity when examining communication between artist and scientists in respect to pedagogical approaches which emphasize the importance of dialogue as part of the educational process.

This phenomenological study aims to explore a dialogue between scientists and artists. We approach this by analysing communication interaction between the two groups in the context of cross-disciplinary educational environments in which art and science are both explored.

This study was based on an analysis of interviews and question how communication among professionals across disciplinary borders of art and science in an educational setting could be charaterised? The communication experience of nine interviewees, who had experiences with the Write a Science Opera (WASO) method in Western Norway in 2015 were analyzed. Data collection and analysys was based on the IPA (Interpretative Phenomenologyval Analysis) by identifying codes refering to either the artists’ or the scientists’ perspectives.

The results show that the issue of effective dialogue between science and art practitioners and educators is perceived as central to successful realization of cross-disciplinary art and science projects in educational settings, and has therefore provided the context for this research. The dialogue give a bases for mutual education and communication, same as a conceptual understanding about each other, same as it facilitate integration of disciplines.
