Carl Bybee

Institution: University of Oregon

Country: United States

Carl Bybee is the director of the Oregon Media Literacy Project which is focused on bringing new understandings of the relationships between media technologies, human flourishing and the living planet to educators, students and policy makers.

Carl received his Ph.D. in Mass Communication from the University of Wisconsin and is currently an associate professor of Media Studies at the University of Oregon. There he teaches in the areas of media and democracy, civic engagement, consumer culture and the environment and philosophies of technology.

Carl’s current work is focused on bringing an evolutionary, embodied, cognitive perspective to Media Studies through the work of American Pragmatism. This spring he was a co-convener of an international roundtable on Media Literacies for a Living World, which worked to initiate a dialog on the implications of a body-mind-technology-ecology perspective for media education and policy making. He has also been involved in the Civic Media Repair Project, which looks at the intersection of placemaking and civic engagement for the creation of public knowledge. This project is viewed as a complement to traditional journalism in meeting the needs of contemporary citizens to formulate and evaluate the kinds of knowledge necessary to build communities that guided by a heightened awareness of human-technology-environment interdependence.

Recent papers by Carl include: “Pope Francis Explains Pragmatism to the World: Integral Ecology, Pragmatism and the Work of Communication,” “An Aesthetics and Ethics of Placemaking an Ecological Public Sphere: Dewey and Lippmann's Publics and the Challenge of Ecology,” and “A Contemplative Metamedia Literacy Education.”
