Gan Hup TAN is an educator at heart. A Chemist by training, Gan Hup taught Chemistry to pre-university students before heading the Science department in a Singaporean high school. He was also responsible for tertiary education policies in his days at the Higher Education Division, with the Ministry of Education, Singapore and was responsible for the conceptualisation of the Singapore Institute of Technology in 2008.
Currently, Gan Hup's work focuses on how physical context and curriculum can be combined to create authentic interactions and enhanced learning. As the lead for SMU-X, the flagship initiative for the Singapore Management University, he pushes a movement towards more active participation and hands-on, project-based learning in real-world settings, away from the didactic or purely virtual. He also looks at space innovations, especially out-of-classroom environments as they support active learning. As part of his portfolio, Gan Hup looks at the creation of collaborative community spaces for students and university stakeholders which allow the bridging of industry and academia and at the same time cater to the learning habits of the millennials.
Gan Hup holds an MBA from INSEAD, France, a post-graduate diploma in teaching and learning (Chemistry and Mathematics) from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and a BSC (Hons) in Chemistry from the University of Southamption, United Kingdom.
