Christina Anketell is an Associate Professor and the Department Chair of the Academic Connections at Los Angeles Trade Technical College (LATTC) in California, U.S.A. LATTC, which is one of the nine public two-year colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD), focuses on vocational and technical training for career-oriented students. The Academic Connections department provides support services to students through courses and workshops that strengthen students’ fundamental skills in English reading, writing, and mathematics to help them achieve their academic, vocational and personal goals. English as a Second Language, computer literacy, self-efficacy, and study skills courses are also part of the course offerings.

Christina graduated from the University of Sri Lanka with a Bachelor’s degree in Classics. Her qualifications include the Diploma for Overseas Teachers of English from the Royal Society of Arts London, U.K., a Master’s degree in English as a Second Language from California State University, Los Angeles, a Master’s degree in Education from Point Loma Nazarene University, San Diego, U.S.A.

Christina began her teaching career at the University of Sri Lanka teaching English for Science and Technology (EST) for engineering and architecture students. She also taught English for Academic Purposes (EAP) at the British Council, Sri Lanka reinforcing the language skills of students from the Indian subcontinent prior to pursuing graduate study programs in the United Kingdom. She has continued teaching English as a Second Language in Southern California at the community college level. Currently, in addition to ESL, Christina teaches foundational reading and writing skills. Christina continues to use her skills in teaching English for Academic Purposes with her involvement with the college’s nursing department assisting students with reading and study skills development.

Christina has a passion for curriculum development and teacher training. She has developed both academic and vocational language programs for traditional and non-traditional programs. Currently, she is involved in developing the reading, writing, and ESL courses taught by the Academic Connections.

Christina has consistently presented papers at the California Teachers of English Speakers of Other Languages (CATESOL) regional and state conferences. Her latest presentation was at the CATESOL Los Angeles Regional Conference as a panelist in the Novice Teacher Strand providing recent graduates tips and suggestions on building resumes and gaining employment as ESL instructors.

The model of the Academic Connections was featured at a poster session at the Conference of Acceleration in Developmental Education. This was a co-presentation with her vice chair, Maryanne Galindo entitled Foundations for Success: An Accelerated Interdisciplinary Pathway to College and Career Readiness.
