Stefan Colibaba

Stefan Colibaba is a professor of Literature and Applied Linguistics. For more than 20 years he has been working at Al.I.Cuza University Iasi – Romania, where he teaches courses in ESP, Education Management, Strategies in teaching/learning languages, Materials development and evaluation, Languages for Europe, Literature and Language Learning.

Stefan Colibaba supervises MA dissertations in areas related to Quality assurance in higher education and CLIL approaches to teaching science subjects, e.g. History, Geography, Social Sciences.

He also sits on doctoral panels for PhD theses which look at the impact of European educational initiatives (e.g. Bologna process) on national policies and practices in education.
Stefan Colibaba is particularly interested in introducing blended learning formats, ICT resources, and interactive tools with MA students. He advocates systematic use of internationally-recognized benchmarks in evaluating language competences (e.g. CEFR).

Based on his prior experience as a teacher of ESP in a vocational school (having Chemistry as main profile), Stefan Colibaba has written on the didactics of teaching scientific discourse. This is part of a long-term action research project as a result of which he was selected in 2006 among the 21 Best Practitioners in a survey carried out under the European project MODE.

He has also been involved in European projects that undertake to develop innovative non-formal tools for assessing and validating competences at the workplace. In this capacity, he has taken part in designing training materials and evaluation schemes.

Stefan Colibaba has been course director and/or lead trainer for regional training courses (Thailand, Colombia, Pakistan, Hungary, Romania, Kyrgyzstan, Uzbekistan, Rep.of Moldova) focusing on the link between language development and human rights education, citizenship education, inclusive education, critical thinking, autonomous learning.

As part of his academic responsibilities, Stefan Colibaba researches the implications of the concept of autonomy on curriculum design in higher education and coordinates the practicum of final year undergraduate students. Consequently, he is in regular contact with the Department for Professional Development in the Romanian Ministry of Education and with Technical Universities and Universities for Agronomic Studies in Romania.
