Assessing the Potential of Biogas Production from Different Feedstock

Lamfu Fabrice Yengong, University of Buea (Cameroon)

Abstract

Biogas technology is an efficient solution to address the issue of more stable and efficient renewable energy source through its potential ability to keep pollution free environment. The present work explores the different feedstock’s around Buea municipality, South West Region of Cameroon, with objectives been; to determine the pH, MC, VS and TS in the different feedstock before and after anaerobic digestion, Co-digest (combining different feedstock) for biogas production change and finally to determine which feedstock has a higher BMP (Biomethane potential). The pH was measured using a pH meter, the total solid, moisture content using a Memmert oven (120 0C for 10 Hours) and ash content and volatile solids using a Muffle furnace (650 0C for 3 Hours) of the wastes were examined before and after the Anaerobic process. Furthermore, 15 kg of PS, CD, MSW, FD and MSW+PS+CD+FD each were feed into 5 20Littre plastic containers, with dimension 26 X 36 cm used as digesters. The volume of Biogas produced were measure periodically (after one week) using Archimedes Principle and gas analysed using the Biogas 5000 model. The result showed that, the pH, MC, TS, VS was maintain within the range of (6.7-7.4), (76.39- 85.19)%, (14.80-23.61)%, (7.14-34.09)%. The volume of the gas produces were PS = 0.057l/g (570ml/g), FD = 1.40l/g (1400ml/g), CD = 0.97ml/g (970ml/g), MSW = 2.07l/g (2070ml/g) and (PS + FD + CD + MSW) = 0.67ml/g (670ml/g). Conclusively, MSW has the highest (2.07 l/g) biogas production and the least been PS (0.057l/g). Hence can be recommended that, MSW should be used for anaerobic process within the municipality of Buea and FD and CD should be co-digested since they have high VS which has a direct proportionality to Biogas production.
