Taste Construction of Children's Art Education in Indonesia

Abstract

This research aims to explain the construction of taste in Globalart and describe the symbolic violence as a construction of taste mechanism and related discourse. This research is a case study of children art education in Globalart Yogyakarta. The object of the research is the process of art education in Globalart. Data were obtained from observation, unstructured interviews, and literature study. This study uses Pierre Bourdieu theory to investigate the art education activity as a social practice. The first step of analyzing is capital classification, competition schema, that affect the taste of its members. Next step is explained about symbolical violence as a mechanism of taste construction. Discussion continued by Herbert Read theory about art education that emphasis on art as creative education. Ki Hadjar Dewantara theory also used to analyze the concept of children's art education. The results show that Globalart becomes a taste construction media about art studios trend, and about creativity discourse on children's painting. Parents believe that one of the successes from art education can be seen from how many children won a competition. It causes in the variety of children's painting type in which the parents want or good for parents. Parents make their children as a tool to gain prestige and to legitimate the thought about their success in educating their children. The orientation of the competition affects the process in art education at Globalart. Teachers finally teach art not based on the nature of art itself, but according to what the parents and market want. There is a symbolic violence in education process as an ideology implant mechanism about the taste of the dominant class at Globalart to the children.
