Using Children’s Literature for the Acquisition of Lexico-Grammar In Young Learner Classrooms

Dönercan Dönük, Mersin University (Turkey)

Abstract

Voices from the classroom raise the issue of problems of poor grammar that has arisen due to the misconceptions as for the CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) Methodology. As evidence for these concerns EFL and ESL practitioners have come to realize that without conscious grammar, fossilization has become a major problem (Borg, S.,1999;  Borg, S. 2001; Borg, S.,2003; Borg, S. 2006), which brings about the issue of revisiting grammar. Knowledge about language (KAL) and Knowledge about Grammar (KAG) ( Borg, S.,2005)  are the key points that makes the division between learning as a conscious and acquisition as an unconscious process of language intake.
As a descriptive study, this paper aims to introduce a classroom procedure at ITE (Initial Teacher Education) programs, which basically describes the steps to be followed while applying language teaching methodology. The design proposed in this study is based on the assumption that if grammar is the required component of the foreign language, then it must be provided for the young language learners in line with the language acquisition procedures, also considering that languages have similarities and differences (parameters and principles)( Chomsky, 1976). Moreover, the notion of lexico-grammar is the milestone of this procedure, for the words have their roots spread to the syntax of the given language. Story telling technique as a language input system works as an ideal tool for the acquisition of lexico-grammar as the course design is centered on the exploitation of authentic stories form the children’s literature. Such stories created online through web 2.0 tools aim to encourage the learners use the language without the abridged or revised versions, for there is massive loss of lexico-grammar, which leads to the deprivation of rich input. The design is expected to become common in the language classrooms, and they are supposed to strike a balance as for the language teaching methodology.
