Feedback: as Told by the Voices in the Classroom

Luke Mandouit, The University of Melbourne (Australia)

Abstract

The influence of teacher feedback on student achievement is well established, but with research demonstrating variance in the levels of effectiveness between different forms of feedback. Adding further complexity is the individual way each student will receive, perceive, and respond to feedback. With most prior research completed from the perspective of the researcher and teacher, these studies investigate the influence of feedback from the learner’s perspective. The aim: to develop a deeper understanding of students’ cognitive and emotional responses to teacher feedback; and, establish what information students identify as essential when receiving feedback from a teacher if they are to improve. In providing their perspective, 103 Secondary student participants from years 10 – 12 were presented with a range of feedback samples, and asked: what they thought teachers were communicating; how this information would shape their future performance; and, what feedback they look for when receiving a piece of work back from a teacher. Following this, interviews were conducted with a small number of these participants with themes identified in the first study discussed and elaborated on. Results supported previous research in that different forms of feedback vary in their effectiveness and influence on the learner, and give new insights from the perspective of the student. These include: the importance of feedback to stimulate learner confidence and motivation; how the level of information provided and emotional affect of the feedback impact on student reception and response; and, what students themselves see as “effective feedback”. This poster will present an overview of this research, and models that represent the student’s emotional and behavioural response to teacher feedback, and a model of effective feedback.
