Further Teacher Training for Implementing Professional Education of Disabled Students in Conditions of Inclusive Education at Universities: Problems and Solutions

Abstract

School-leavers with disabilities have the right for a professional training, including university education, which is believed to be an essential part of Russian national educational system. A priority tend in modern universities development is inclusive education implementation, which provides disabled students with equal abilities in getting quality education. Th objective of implementing inclusive education at universities is to provide those students with available education and to create conditions for their professional identification and social adaptation. Teachers training for working in inclusive education system is one of an essential conditions of the effective and successful professional education of disabled students. That is why improving professional competence of university teachers in educating students with disabilities is a vital link in the chain of creating a system of inclusive high education. As a result, various flexible interdisciplinary programmes and new format of further teacher training are needed. Firstly, university teachers were interviewed during our research in order to identify main problems while organizing the process of disabled students professional training in inclusive environment. The results allowed to form a key demand for further training courses content. Secondly, further training programmes, aimed at preparing teachers to work in inclusive environment, were analyzed. The analysis results demonstrated that current further training programmes do not totally correspond with teachers needs. Thirdly, main directions for system changes in further teacher training were defined in order to prepare university teachers for educating disabled students in inclusive environment. Fourthly, the algorithm of designing an educational programme for further training was worked out. Further teacher training programmes made on the basis of this algorithm were implemented at 10 Russian universities and 459 university teaches participated in these programmes. Further teacher training process presents the system of interconnected stages, analytical, forming, reflexive are among them. The implementation results demonstrated the effective usage of theĀ  created algorithm of creating interdisciplinary programmes for further teacher training in order to prepare university teachers educate students with disabilities in conditions of university inclusive environment. Also, in order to increase the level of preparedness of university teachers to work in the conditions of inclusive education, further training courses structure is divided into theoretical and practice-oriented parts.
