Computers Will not Take my Job: Transformational Teaching Methodologies in the Digital Age

Hadeer Abo El Nagah, Prince Sultan University (Saudi Arabia)

Abstract

As digitalization is sweeping the market of professional translation, a growing fear/challenge facing translation graduates is the employers’ dependency on Machine Translation (MT) and thus threats the employability of human translators. There is an acute need to adapt teaching practices accordingly to improve students’ preparedness and adaptability to the transformed market. Consequently, a less traumatic impact is expected when they face “the real world”. The current study brings into focus innovative approaches designed to tech-driven university level courses in translation and editing. The importance of this research stems from the scarcity of studies examining students’ preparation to the digital challenge in the translation and editing field. The current study fills in this gap; it fosters the usage of collaborative and autonomous learning methodologies to stimulate technical abilities and problem-solving talents. Using qualitative analytical tools, the objectives of the study are; 1- to present structured course components and project based assignments that actively integrate digital tools. 2- to propose methodologies to change the translation classroom from teacher fronted passive mass to a student centered active arena, and 3- to explore students’ and alumna prospective to the validity and effectiveness of the used methodologies.

Keywords: Collaborative learning, innovative teaching methodology, digital challenge, post MT translation training;
