Enhancing Student Achievement through Academic Resilience

Nina Nola, University of Auckland (New Zealand)

Abstract

Tertiary Foundation Certificate (TFC) students at The University of Auckland, Aotearoa New Zealand, are automatically enrolled in an Academic Resilience programme which runs parallel to their academic studies. In one hourly lecture each week student with disadvantaged backgrounds are introduced to wellness practices such as Dweck’s Growth Mindset, enhancing achievement through Stress Less strategies, Mindfulness for Academic success, yoga practices for centred, effective thinking,  Wellness strategies for examinations, and the use of online tools such as CALM. Exposure to these practices encourages students to reflect on their academic selves, and encourages the developments of resilience, and therefore higher achievement. Social anxiety and depression are common experiences in the foundation cohort, and Academic Resilience normalises these experiences and upskills students to better cope with these barriers to success at university. A recent development in the programme is the addition of an interview with each guest lecturer on the programme discussing their topic with Dr Nina Nola so that students are exposed to the ideas and coping strategies and techniques more than once. These recordings are then uploaded on the electronic learning platform for students to access as they need them. This TFC programme initiative is currently informing the university’s Campus Life initiatives to foster better overall wellbeing in students, and consequently improve student engagement, and therefore performance.
