Using Digital Children’s Literature in Young Learner Classrooms

Dönercan Dönük, Mersin University (Turkey)

Abstract

The recent research underpins the importance of grammar since it has been neglected due to the misinterpretation that CLT (Communicative Language Teaching) is basically centered on communication, which has ended up with fluent, but inaccurate language use. This has led to  the realization in EFL ( English as a Foreign Language) and ESL (English as a Second Language) circles  that without conscious, overt  grammar knowledge, fossilization has become a major problem (Borg, S.,1999;  Borg, S. 2001; Borg, S.,2003; Borg, S. 2006), which brings about the issue of revisiting grammar in a way compatible with the needs of young learners as digital natives ( Prensky,1980).

This paper as an extension to the study conducted by Dönük (2018) aims to introduce and design web 2.0 tools in the form of digital story books at ITE (Initial Teacher Education) programs, which basically includes stories flowing in line with the lexico-grammatical components of the curriculum. The design made in this study is based on the fact that if grammar is a must for language learning, then it must be provided for the young learners in line with their interests by using web 2.0 tools to provide lexico-grammatical, but implicit input. The storybooks created by the teacher candidates have been used in young learner classrooms. The results of the research conducted with these teachers confirm that digital books are effective language teaching tools.
