Training in Dictionary Use as an Integral Part of Language Teaching and Learning

Konstantinos Chatzidimou, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki (Greece)

Abstract

The role of the dictionary as a useful tool in language learning is widely acknowledged by learners, teachers, researchers, and laypersons. However, this general theoretical recognition of the dictionary’s value in language learning is not reflected upon the actual procedure of language teaching [1], [2]. The present paper attempts to prove from a theoretical point of view the reasons for the need to acquaint learners with dictionary use and the dictionary as a learning tool within the framework of language teaching and learning [3]. Moreover, general principles, aims of dictionary training and desired reference skills are drawn upon relevant international literature [4], [5]. A plea is made to integrate dictionary training in the process of language teaching, in language learning textbooks, and handbooks of language teaching. The primary idea behind this plea is the argument that dictionary skills (and reference skills in general) [2] are of considerable importance for language learners nowadays both from a pedagogical and a linguistic point of view [6], [7].
