Development of Decision Making Tool for the Design of an Energy Efficient Building Envelope

Jatinder Kaur, School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (India)

Abstract

The design of building envelope, is a decision-making process in which architect has to take decisions for a number of architectural design parameters (i.e. Form, Orientation, Window to-Wall ratio, Shading and Insulation), so that the energy consumption for maintaining indoor comfort is minimum. Decisions related to these parameters are of immense significance for architects, since decisions taken by them especially in the early stages of building envelope design, have major impacts on the final energy consumption of a building. Moreover, the design process has become a complex activity over the past years, due to the advent of newer technologies, materials and rise in expected levels of energy performance of buildings, which has made decision-making all the more difficult. The integration of envelope design with the goal of energy efficiency can be done with judicious selection and combination of design parameters by evaluating/checking/calculating predicted energy performance by simulation softwares. However, these softwares require detailed information and specifications of building geometry, materials, systems etc. for energy calculations, which is generally not available in early stages of design. The complexities of design decision-making can be resolved if architects are provided with easy-to-use, quantifiable, informed decision indications at every step in the design process. In the wake of need of quantified design information without the support of software systems, a hand-held design decision-making tool has been developed, which could help architects in understanding the individual and combined energy performance impact potentials of various design parameters. Such design decision-making tool can have extensive academic applications as well as professional outreach because of its portability, economy and ease of use without requirement of any electricity, battery or computers. The tool is developed for a building typology of fully air-conditioned day time use office buildings in composite climate of India.
