The research topics for her three most recent grant projects were: 1) Effects of Constructivist-Based Chemistry Experimentation on Science Apathy of 2nd and 5th Grade Learners, 2) Arts Integration in Engineering Explorations with 3rd Grade Learners (general and special education populations), and 3) Infusing Mindfulness and Meditation in a Reading Intervention Program for At-Risk 1st Grade Children. During the past three academic years at Wagner College, she has expanded upon these research investigations to focus on the effects of infusing mindfulness methods, meditation, and a growth mindset approach into teacher education course curricula to help future educators support children’s social and emotional learning.

Dr. Lauria completed her baccalaureate studies at Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey with a double major in Elementary Education and Psychology in 1992. She continued on to earn a Master’s degree in Elementary Education in 1995 from the City University of New York, followed by a doctorate in Instructional Leadership from St. John’s University, also in New York, in 2002. Her research interests include individualized modes of learning, educational technologies, S.T.E.A.M. focused pedagogy, E-learning, social and emotional learning, and health and wellness supports for instructional leaders and diverse young learners. She has presented her work in these areas at several international academic conferences in Madrid (ICERI 2009 and 2012), Barcelona (EDULEARN-2010), and Valencia (ICERI – 2011), Spain, as well as Oxford University’s Educational Research Symposium (2013), and the International Academic Forum (IAFOR) in Brighton, UK in 2014. Last month she presented her work on mindfulness methods at Learning & the Brain’s Educating Mindful Minds conference in New York City. Dr. Laura has published multiple, peer–reviewed book chapters and manuscripts, and is working on a book project regarding the role of mindfulness in childhood education.

Prior to joining the faculty at Wagner College, Dr. Lauria spent a decade teaching diverse elementary student populations in grades K-5 in the New York City public school system. Additionally, Dr. Lauria is an independent educational consultant and provides professional development for administrators and faculty in both the public and private sectors. She’s also served on the Board of Trustees for the Staten Island Children’s Museum at Snug Harbor Cultural Center and Botanical Gardens in New York City for the past ten years. She has dedicated over 25 years to the field of education advocating for all children.
