Gabrielle O’Kelly

Gabrielle O’Kelly is Assistant Professor in the UCD School of Nursing, Midwifery and Health Systems, University College, Dublin.
Gabrielle holds a Master of Science in Psychotherapy and a Master of Philosophy in Psychoanalytic Studies. Her PhD from Queen’s University, Belfast, focused on the impact of nurses’ unconscious mental processes on their work with patients, a project for which she was also awarded a Health Research Board Clinical Fellowship.
Gabrielle holds an Advanced Certificate in Group Analytic Psychotherapy, awarded by the Institute of Group Analysis, London and trained as a Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist. She is a member of the Association for Psychoanalytic Psychotherapists of Ireland (APPI).
A registered nurse tutor, Gabrielle has been involved in education since 1992 and has extensive experience in curriculum development, with a particular interest in concept based curriculum models.
Gabrielle’s teaching method of preference is Cooperative Learning. This involves the instructional use of small groups so that students work together to maximize their own and each other’s learning. She has studied this method of learning and teaching over a number of years at the Cooperative Learning Institute, University of Minnesota, USA.
The focus of Gabrielle’s teaching is interpersonal and teamwork skills, therapeutic interventions in mental health nursing and evidence based practice in mental health nursing.
Gabrielle’s research interest is in applied psychoanalysis.


Areas of expertise: nursing education, cooperative learning, curriculum development, application of psychoanalytic theory, therapeutic interventions in mental health, technologies in learning, interpersonal and teamwork skills.
