Associate Professor Elspeth McInnes AM is an academic in the School of Education of the University of South Australia.

Elspeth graduated with a PhD in Sociology and a first class Honours degree in a Bachelor of Arts from Flinders University of South Australia in 2002. She has held various teaching and research roles in the University of South Australia’s School of Education, most recently as Associate Professor of Sociology in Education and as Chair of the University Human Research Ethics Committee.

Elspeth came to academia following a career in journalism and in Australia’s community sector where she has long been an advocate and policy specialist in family welfare, family violence and family law policy working with organisations including the National Council of Single Mothers and their Children and the Australian Council of Social Services to develop policies supporting families living on low incomes and those dealing with family violence and child abuse, particularly in the context of parental separation. Her contributions in the community sector were acknowledged by the Australian government in 2006 with the award of a Member of the Order of Australia.

Elspeth’s teaching focus at the University of South Australia centres on early childhood education developing educator knowledge of and response to adverse social contexts affecting children including trauma, poverty, child maltreatment and neglect, child sexual abuse, family violence, parental separation, parental mental illness and addiction and children as carers. The 0-8 educator workforce needs to be able to identify concerns, respond appropriately, comply with legal requirements and duty of care and effectively meet the learning needs of children in these situations.

Elspeth’s research interests have attended to impacts of family violence and other form of trauma on children and mothers, particularly in contexts of parental separation and to pedagogies supporting children’s wellbeing in education sites.

Elspeth has co-edited a number of books including Elspeth McInnes and Anka D. Mason (Eds.) 2019. Where To From Here? Examining Conflict- Related and Relational Interaction Trauma, Leiden, Netherlands: Brill Publishers;
