Shannon A. Patterson is a full-time instructor of mathematics at St. Philip’s College, a Historically Black College and Hispanic Serving Institution in the Alamo Colleges District in San Antonio, Texas.
Shannon graduated in Mathematics (B.A.) from the University of Texas at Austin in 1994. In 2005, she received a Master of Education degree in Curriculum & Instruction (Integrated Mathematics) from Our Lady of the Lake University. In 2018, she earned a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Mathematics Education from The University of the Incarnate Word. Her dissertation is entitled Map of MathWorld: Identifying Core Practices for Successful Supplemental Instruction of Community College Math Students.
From 1996 to 2015, she worked as a teacher of mathematics at two local high schools. In 1998, she obtained a lifetime Texas Educator Certificate in Secondary Mathematics (Grades 6-12) from the Texas State Board of Education. She also served as a lead teacher of a small learning community that functioned as a credit recovery/dropout prevention program for at-risk students. Additionally, she provided educational services to residents at a local juvenile correctional treatment center.
Since then, she prepares and facilitates learning for students who are enrolled in developmental and college-level mathematics courses at St. Philip’s College (SPC). She is a lead instructor for the Fundamental of Mathematics for Teachers courses. She currently serves as a member of the following committees at SPC: Developmental Math, Math Distance Learning, College Level Math (Non-STEM), Institutional Student Learning Outcomes Core Assessment, SPC Dual Credit Professional Development, Women in STEM-CEM, Jessica’s Project, Institutional Review Board, and STEM Student Mentoring Program. In 2016, she earned a Master Teacher Certification. She also received SPC’s Distance Learning Certification in 2017.
Shannon is a member of the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) and the Texas Community College Teachers Association (TCCTA). In 2017, she participated as a guest panelist in the STEM Lecture Series, entitled Women Trailblazing Their Way in the STEM Fields, at St. Philip’s College. In 2019, she participated in the 23rd Annual American Association of Behavioral and Social Sciences (AABSS) Conference in Las Vegas, Nevada. Her poster presentation was entitled Map of MathWorld.
