Aikaterini Venetikidou

Aikaterini Venetikidou has graduated from the Department of Primary Education at the University of Thessaly and ever since she has moved and lives abroad for the past 5 years. At first, she moved to Czechia where she acquired her TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) Certificate and afterwards she worked there as an English Teacher in and gained experience with both Primary and Secondary aged students.

During her working experience in Czechia, she was involved in the project “Life for Languages” by the National Pedagogical Institute of Czechia. Aikaterini has then been assisting in various classes teaching bilingually along with the Czech-speaking teachers in English and Czech and implementing CLIL method.

As an educator, she has constantly been interested in innovating teaching for second language acquisition. She has developed along with her colleagues the curriculum for the English language in Primary by adapting tasked-based approaches. Moreover, she has been part of several eTwinning and Erasmus+ projects as well as she has been tutoring courses for Secondary aged students, e.g. “Blogging and Photography”, “Entrepreneurship: the Caffinci Project” and “What’s on world?”.

Since September 2017 Aikaterini is based in Portugal where she works primarily as an English Teacher at an International Bilingual Portuguese/English school. She teaches English, Mathematics and Science from ages 5 to 10. Moreover, she prepares her students for the Cambridge YLE and Trinity College Exams, as well as, she coordinates some of the school's Assemblies. Aikaterini has been greatly interested in raising awareness of multiculturalism and multilingualism as well as how culture can be implemented in the language classroom. Thus, she has been part of the “Different but equal” project during which she and her colleagues developed educational material for social inclusion within the multicultural classroom. In addition, within the context of the same project she and her colleagues along with the students they worked and created a Multilingual Dictionary that includes all the respected language of the school community.

Last but not least, Aikaterini is currently enrolled and completing the Master’s Programme “Language Education for Refugees and Migrants” by Hellenic Open University. Part of her studies includes Second Language Acquisition, Migration, Multilingualism, and Intercultural Communication, Critical Pedagogy, Design and Development of Educational Material for Digital Media and Human Rights and International Law for Refugees and Migrants.

As an educator of students with diverse sociolinguistic backgrounds, Aikaterini tries to incorporate culture in the language classroom, in which each student feels safe, secure, special and appropriately challenged. Her greatest interests involve bilingual education, integration of technology into education and innovative learning, Project, Task and Game-Based learning.

Areas of expertise: Teaching English as a Second/Foreign Language, Multicultural education, Project-based learning, design and development of educational material for digital media.
