Siva Raj Rajagopalan is an Adjunct Professor of Computer Science at the New York University Tandon School of Engineering, where he teaches in the Cyber Fellows Program, an online program focused on cybersecurity skills improvement for a diverse community.
Raj got a B.Tech in Computer Science in 1986 from the Indian Institute of Technology – Mumbai, and a PhD in Computer Science in 1995 from Boston University. Since then, for the last 26 years, he has constantly been working in the field of Cybersecurity.
He has worked in a variety of corporate labs focusing on original research in various aspects of cybersecurity ranging from theoretical cryptography to system security to cybersecurity training. He currently works for a major manufacturer of residential IoT systems where he is responsible for the overall cybersecurity of the entire product portfolio. He has been teaching online at New York University since 2011, specializing in teaching Graduate "Design and Analysis of Algorithms" at first and then Practical Cybersecurity for System Architects.
Raj is an expert in cybersecurity, specifically as it applies to creation of commercial products. In his professional capacity, he oversees the provisioning of security in every aspect of product creation from requirements, through design and development, operations and maintenance, and finally incident response. From 2012 through 2016, in collaboration with Prof Xinming Ou at U South Florida, he helmed a pioneering research project introducing techniques from Ethnography in the study of issues in the field of cybersecurity. That project led to several new insights into the problems plaguing the field such as the difficulty of training security personnel and pervasive management practices that are inimical to secure product development. This project resulted in several papers and best paper awards. Raj has specially endeavoured to implement some of the insights from that project in his current teaching assignment.
