Fabian Gunnars recieved his doctoral degree in Education last year at Mid Sweden University. His expertise includes learning analytics, systematic review, educational behaviorist design, and high-demanding data management.

He conducted systematic literature reviews relating educational technology, methodological development for field work with wearables in schools, and multimodal learning analytics studies with psychophysiological measures of students during curricular classroom activities in primary education. The research project informed the quality assessment for school management in a digitalization project with educational leaders cooperating in three municipalities. He also represented doctoral students at the council for education at researcher level for several years.

He currently focuses on quantitative research with cross-classified multilevel models rooted in medicinal tradition for biostatistics. Further, along with related job position in higher education management, he is working as an educational developer to implement solutions for university teachers to design their courses, and reduce student dropout risk, in part by broadening his previous research interests and themes. He is also involved in an operative group of a pilot project in Sustaingov, part of a 10-year Vinnova-financed leadership project that aims to reform Swedish public sector through large-scale innovations. In the related Vinnova project, his responsibilities includes literature review of system sciences relating educational interventions for system capacity, and statistical analysis with data mining of public procurement data for economic themes.

He is affiliated with various research groups that extends across over ten different universities in Sweden, such as Higher Education and E‑Learning (HEEL) at the department of education in Mid Sweden University in Östersund, The Centre for Research on Economic relations (CER) in Sundsvall, the GRADEresearch consortium of nine Swedish universities, and Center for Educational Leadership and Excellence (CELE) at Stockholm school of economics.
