Design of a Direct Observation Protocol in the Secondary School Classroom

Abstract

Mathematic education is constantly changing. In addition to a review of the literature, a systematic classroom observation provides first-hand information from an objectivistic-realistic approach [3]. Therefore, this paper presents an instrument to observe teaching performance in the mathematics subject in secondary education. It is based on two others: TEDS-Instruct, by Schlesinger et al. [2], created for German-speaking countries, and POEMat.ES, by Joglar et al. [1], developed for observations in Spanish secondary education. In addition to these tools, various qualitative items are included in the new observation instrument. These items have been taken from the Spanish legislation and other literature.
