Dr. Marcus Brumfield is an Assistant Professor of Computer Science at Tougaloo College. He holds a Ph.D. in Engineering Education and a master’s degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Mississippi State University, along with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science from Tougaloo College. His research interests include engineering education, cybersecurity, and machine learning, focusing on broadening participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and improving educational outcomes for underrepresented students.
Dr. Brumfield leads student-centered initiatives to strengthen the STEM workforce pipeline and is an associate with the Tougaloo College Research and Development Foundation. He is the coordinator for the Tougaloo College Cybersecurity Clinic, funded through Google and the Tides Foundation. Dr. Brumfield also serves as the faculty mentor for the Scalable Asymmetric Lifecycle Engagement (SCALE) program in Radiation-Hardening at Tougaloo College.
In addition to his work at Tougaloo College, Dr. Brumfield also engages in ongoing education. He is a fellow for the National Institutes of Health (NIH) AIM-AHEAD Bridge2AI program and the Propel Center Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Cybersecurity Fellow program. Dr. Brumfield also holds ISC2 Certified in Cybersecurity (CC), CompTIA Security+, and ISC2 Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certifications and brings prior professional experience as an enterprise database and applications administrator. His conference presentation will highlight a faculty-driven model for cybersecurity curriculum development and professional collaboration across HBCUs.
Dr. Brumfield is committed to building pathways into technology careers through interdisciplinary collaboration, applied learning, and community engagement. He actively partners with industry and nonprofit organizations to bring real-world cybersecurity challenges into the classroom and extend experiential learning opportunities to his students. Through mentorship, research, and curriculum innovation, he seeks to empower students in STEM to thrive in both academic and professional settings.
