Maria João Carvalho

Maria João Carvalho is Assistant Professor at the University of Trás-os-Montes and Alto Douro (UTAD), and since 2013 she is a member of the Centre for Research and Intervention in Education of the Faculty of Psychology and Education Sciences of the University of Porto, joining the research group Knowledge, Innovation and Diversities in Education (KIDE).

Her PhD in Education, completed in 2007 at UTAD, built upon multi-rationality in decision making process in school leadership and management.

Since 2017, she is the Director of the Doctoral Programme in Educational Sciences of UTAD. She is also the Director of the Master Course in Education, specializing in Educational Administration, of UTAD. In 2017 she has been nominated member of the Ethics Committee of UTAD. She served as Board Member of the Portuguese Society of Educational Sciences between 2014 and 2017, and she is member of the Governing Board of the Portuguese Forum for Educational Administration. Since 2010, she has been serving as external evaluator of the Portuguese General-Inspectorate of Education/Ministry of Education. She acts as consultant of school clusters included at the Portuguese TEIP Programme (Educational Territory of Priority Intervention).

She has extensive experience of conducting research and publishing within the field of education and leadership, management and governance in educational contexts over a period of 15 years. She is actively involved in research projects at UTAD, CIIE, and at other institutions, being currently involved in developing the Integrated and Innovative Plan of Prevent School Failure at an inner counties cluster, and, at CIIE, in the EU-funded EEPN - European Education Policy Network on Teachers and School Leaders (2019-2022).

She supervises MA and PhD students in educational leadership and management, school evaluation and teacher education.
