Nemira Macianskiene

Nemira Mačianskienė, PhD, is a professor of the English language at the Institute of Foreign Languages at Vytautas Magnus University, Lithuania. http://uki.vdu.lt/ Nemira obtained the English language teacher’s diploma at Vilnius State Pedagogical Institute in 1977; her MA degree in Adult Education (TEFL) at California State University, Northridge, the USA, in 1994; and her doctoral degree in Social Sciences at Vytautas Magnus University (VMU) in 2001 for the doctoral dissertation “Foreign Language Learning Strategies: Psycho-educational Dimensions”.

Nemira Mačianskienė has taught English as a foreign language at VMU since 1991. She was the founder and the director of the Institute of Foreign Languages at VMU from 2001 to 2015. During that time the Institute became an institution responsible for the implementation of language policy at the university, and one of the leading language teaching institutions in the country and Europe, offering the widest range of foreign languages (30 languages on offer) for university linguistic and non-linguistic program students and the broader community in Lithuania, as well as the centre for the spread of multilingualism and plurilingual competence development.

Nemira has been the Chair of the VMU scientific cluster Research into Plurilingual Competence Development since its establishment in 2008. The cluster focuses its research activities on the study of multilingualism as a cultural phenomenon and the main educational object, problems of teaching/learning foreign languages, acquisition, development and maintenance of plurilingual communicative competence, efficiency of application of innovative language teaching/learning technologies, the use of learning strategies and other related fields.

Her main didactic and research interests include language policy, multilingualism and plurilingualism, intercultural and cross-cultural communication, language learning and teaching in the multilingual and multicultural higher education space. She is the Editor-in-chief of the international scientific journal Sustainable Multilingualism (www.uki.vdu.lt/sm; https://content.sciendo.com/view/journals/sm/sm-verview.xml; included in SCOPUS) and a member of the editorial board of two more international journals in linguistics.

Nemira has been the chair of the biennial international scientific conference Sustainable Multilingualism since 2011. http://uki.vdu.lt/sustainable-multilingualism-2019/

Nemira teaches Multilingualism in Europe and Cross-Cultural Communication courses in a MA program, Teaching English as a Foreign Language Methodology course in a BA program at the Faculty of Humanities and English C1: Intercultural Communication and English for Social Sciences (C1/C2) at the IFL of VMU.

She has participated in numerous European projects as the partner coordinator (FAB, IntlUni, DISCO II, Molan, HUMART, JIP), coordinated a structural foundation support project Synergy of Content and Foreign Language; and currently is participating in the Erasmus + projects LISTiac, MiLLaT and EuLe).
