Agnes Vashegyi MacDonald is Lecturer in the Department of Sociology & Anthropology teaching a variety of sociology courses.
Agnes graduated in Comparative Literature – Sociology Major from the University of British Columbia in 2010. Since then, for the last 11 years, she has been teaching Sociology.
From 2010 to 2011 she worked at her Alma Mater, at UBC, teaching 3-rd year Sociology classes in the areas of Social Inequality and the Sociology of Work.
From 2012 to 2020 she worked at Columbia College as a Sociology instructor teaching first and second-year courses to international students in Vancouver.
In 2016 she served on the Board of Governors at Columbia College.
In 2019 she served as the Assistant Dean for the Social Sciences A Faculty at Columbia College.
Between 2012 and 2018, Agnes taught additional first and second-year Sociology courses on contract at Langara College.
Also, from 2014 to 2020, she taught third-year Sociology courses on a contract basis in Simon Fraser University in the subjects of the Sociology of Knowledge, Classical Sociological Thought, Global Problems and the Culture of Capitalism, and the Sociology of Sport.
From summer 2020, Agnes has been teaching as a full-time lecturer at SFU; her courses include Introduction to Sociology, Social Control, Gender Relations, and Classical Sociological Thought.
Agnes is an expert in teaching undergraduate Sociology courses. She has developed multiple course curricula, including the Sociology of Race and Ethnic Relations and Sociology of Work 2nd year courses at Columbia College, as well as, designed her teaching material in all of her classes.
Her doctoral dissertation was published in 2011 in a book version entitled Generation West: The Nyugat Review and
Hungary’s Modernist Turn, 1908-1941, which offers a sociological analysis of the developments of modernity in art
and culture in Hungary. She also published the book chapter, “Antal Szerb’s The Queen’s Necklace.” A ‘real history’ of
cross cultural intersections in Hungarian literature” in Hungarian Literary Culture in the World: National Literature in
Intercultural Contexts (2016), along with articles “Undoing the Collective Amnesia: A Brief Discussion of Feminism and
Women Writers in Hungary” in Atlantis: A Women’s Studies Journal (2010), and “The ‘Lukács Effect’ in Twentieth
Century Hungarian Literature and Film” in The Rocky Mountain
Review (2009). Her conference proceedings include, “Magyar Műhely: Fifty Years of Hungarian Artists in Paris and
Budapest” at 20th Congress of the International Comparative Literature Association, Université de Sorbonne, Paris, 2013.
