David Sotir

David Sotir is an Academic Learning Advisor in the Higher Education Language and Presentation Support (HELPS) Centre at the University of Technology Sydney, Australia.

David is committed to supporting students in all faculties to reach their full potential during their higher education learning journey through the development of academic language and literacy skills while fostering their sense of place, community and confidence. He is responsible for individual consultations to students and supervision of triage sites, functioning as the first point of referral for escalated assistance needs to facilitate holistic service provision. In addition, David oversees the development of web- and paper-based resources, the delivery of skills-based workshops and writing clinics to enhance students’ language proficiency and literacy skills while promoting academic integrity. He is continually engaged in activities of critical practice, learning facilitation, communities of practice, and the assurance of organisational quality and efficiency.

David has a CELTA (Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) from the Royal Society of Arts and Cambridge English with over 30 years’ experience in ESL instruction. He also has a BA majoring in Linguistics and Japanese and an MA in Applied Japanese for Business Purposes (with Merit) from The University of Sydney. He has concurrently worked as an English/Japanese interpreter and translator for over 20 years while being actively involved in the field of higher education. Passionate about lifelong and deep learning, David is currently involved in studying a Grad Cert in Higher Education Teaching and Learning.
