Development of Linguistic Awareness in a 1st Grade of Primary School

Abstract

This scientific article is based on a reflective analysis of the pedagogical intervention period that took place under the Supervised Educational Practice in 1st and 2nd cycle of Basic Education. The pedagogical intervention was developed in a 1st grade context.
One of the goals stated in the Intervention Plan intended to develop linguistic awareness, which was considered extremely relevant in order to accomplish this research successfully.
The research was focused on an activity that intended to validate if the students were able to develop grammatical knowledge based on activities related to grammatical reflection without being taught these grammar rules within a classroom environment.   
In general, the results show that students are competent in these kind of activities, since they were able to group words following several criterion, related to orthographic knowledge and also phonological, semantic and syntactic awareness. On the other hand, discussion and sharing of ideas contributed substantially to the success of the students, as they helped each other mutually and built knowledge within the group.
In summary, investing in the implementation of activities by discovery and in the promotion of grammatical reflection are crucial aspects during the first years of schooling by promoting the development of linguistic awareness and emphasizing, in a gradual and significant manner, children’s’ implicit knowledge about language.
