Formative assessment is an important process to assess and monitor student learning achievement and to determine how to motivate students to move extend themselves on their learning track. The subjects of this study are 20, first year, English major students who attended a Mass Media course. The group included 5 male and 15 female students. This study is a survey research using questionnaires, survey forms and interviews as research instruments. The result of the study shows that the students’ engagement and motivation to learn and challenge themselves increased. Quizizz, the online assessment tool, has also provided a gamification dimension that can be used live in the classroom. It created a competitive atmosphere among students. The results assisted teachers to understand students’ strength and weakness to differentiate with less planning to deliver knowledge to fulfill individual students’ need. Moreover, Qizizz gives teachers opportunities to be a facilitator who is pedagogically aware. It creates a chance for students to progress and constantly monitor their own learning outcome. This live formative assessment activity also gives the students a chance to connect learning activity through technology to the actual live learning live in the classroom.
