The ICT Challenge in the Spanish Language Classroom in Nigeria

Purity Ada Uchechukwu, Nnamdi Azikiwe University (Nigeria)

Abstract

Statistics show that the number of internet users in Nigeria is one of the fastest growing in the African continent. This may give rise to the assumption that the number of internet users in the country is a digital indicator of adoption of ICT in the society. This paper argues that while this may be so, it does not necessarily translate to ICT adoption and application in all sectors in that society. This paper is an analysis of the use of internet language learning resources in the learning of Spanish as a foreign language in a university in Nigeria. It showcases the perspective of students studying Spanish as a foreign language, their familiarity with Spanish on line resource tools for learning within and outside the classroom as against the traditional classroom method. The study concludes that poor internet connectivity and facilities pose the greatest hurdles to students accessing Spanish online language materials; and the main factor for the continuous sustenance of the traditional classroom method in foreign language acquisition in the institution.
