The Effect of Edmodo and Facebook on Learners’ Writing Motivation

Abstract

For foreign language learners, writing is the most challenging task and affects their motivation to learn. This study explores the use Edmodo and Facebook to teach writing to Indonesian English as a Foreign Language (EFL) learners on a low-technology context. Both social networks allow learners to share not only one-to-one but also several modes of communication messages. The learning using Edmodo was observed. Students’ perception on their learning was recorded through online questionnaire and focus group discussions. 145 vocational higher education learners in Indonesia participated in this mixed methods study. The responses revealed that Edmodo and Facebook were interchangeable in assisting learners to keep motivated in completing their writing tasks. Both were useful inside and outside of the classroom activities. Learners reported negative and positive feedback given by their peers on their writing tasks. Even though, the feedback was focussed on grammatical and spelling errors, the learners were not demotivated to complete their tasks. However, the motivation to keep going with the task completion was due to external factors (i.e., to get a good score). This study reports that technology-mediated Task Based Learning affects language learning motivation among students of low foreign language proficiency.
