Abstract

For the last few decades, content language instruction through a target language has become a widespread educational approach around the globe and research into Content and Language Integrated Learning (CLIL) is attracting great interest among distinguished scholars (Altinkamis, 2009; Fernandez, 2009; Gonzalez & Barbero, 2013).   CLIL aims to increase the exposure of language learners to the target language (mainly English) by using it as a pedagogical tool to teach ordinary schools subjects, e.g. maths and history. CLIL in Turkey is gaining in popularity yet studies regarding its implementation are few in number. This study, therefore, aims to shed light on this issue through a pilot study on the implementation of CLIL in 5th grade English classrooms of 6 private k-12 schools in Istanbul, Turkey. The study attempts to provide evidence about how CLIL materials can be devleopmed and implemented in fifth grade classrooms and also explore the challenges of the English teachers and students experience during the CLIL-based lessons. Data was collected using questionnaires and open-ended questions administered to 28 English teachers and 267 students as well as classroom observations carried out by the program coordinator in 16 fifth grade English classrooms. The findings will be discussed further in this study.
