Translation Errors in Movie Titles

Abstract

The present paper aims at studying the translation errors in movie titles in a variety of languages. The importance of studying such errors in the translation of movies is related to significant cultural differences between different peoples in the World. The data analyzed consists of 21movies that happen to have translation mistakes in their titles. These selected movies were translated to the target language and then translated back to English in order to ease the investigation and the justification. Contrastive analysis is employed as a theoretical framework for the current study. The analysis showed that the errors happened due to cultural differences, structural difference, lexical equivalence problems between SL and TL and others; the study aims to find which mostly affects translation errors. The paper concludes that there seven types of classification of translation errors. Such errors vary between grammatical, semantic, stylistic and even moral errors. It has been proposed in this study that there are certain ways of tackling each error. This reveals the competence of the translators who tackle such errors as it will decrease errors in translating movies that reflect the content, image, culture, etc.
