Redesigning the Business and Economics curriculum: The Role of Business English Communication

Nikola Dimeski, Faculty of Economics – Prilep (Macedonia, The former Yugoslav Republic of)

Abstract

Although the English language is used as a lingua franca in the business world, the Macedonian higher education institutions still have not thoroughly incorporated it into the Business and Economics curricula. In that regard, this paper discusses the need to redesign the current curricula to improve the skills of the graduates. A strong and effective curriculum will have relevant content relative to the learners' needs and wants but will also include the recommendations of the business community and the educators. Therefore, the proposed redesign in this paper is based on the views and recommendations of the representatives of six large Macedonian companies, ten university professors teaching Business English and seventy-five university students studying Economics or Business. The research results guided the author to propose and discuss several changes for upgrading the teaching and learning process of Business English by creating a redesigned student-centred curriculum for Business and Economics university students in the country. In order to successfully implement the needed changes in the redesigned curriculum, Business English communication skills need to be considered a core competency for the students.
