Dr. Samuel Dermas Habtemariam is from Eritrea. He is an expert in refugee education, culturally responsive pedagogy, Teaching English as a Foreign language (TEFL) methodologies, and bilingualism. He earned a doctoral degree in Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL) from Addis Ababa University in Ethiopia in 2015; Currently, he is conducting research for a doctoral degree at the University of Kansas that focuses on refugee education and culturally responsive pedagogy.
In Eritrea, Dr. Habtemariam taught TEFL courses at College of Arts and Social Science in Adi Keih and had a teaching assignment at the University of Asmara. Besides, he worked as International English Language Testing System (IELTS) examiner and English Language Teaching (ELT) trainer at the British Council in Asmara. He also was a member of the national English textbook writing committee and contributed to the production of English textbooks for Grades 9-12 for Eritrean students.
In Ethiopia, Dr. Habtemariam was the chair of the English Language & Literature Department and an assistant professor of TEFL at Kotebe Metropolitan University. He also served as director of the Student Affairs Office at St. Mary’s University.
In the United States, Dr. Habtemariam delivered instruction remotely for both graduate and undergraduate students in the Department of Curriculum & Teaching at the University of Kansas (KU). The courses he taught include:
