Own Devices and New Technologies Used in Education

Abstract

Different methods or types of activities and resources (especially use of smart phones, tablets, laptops) can be very useful to improve the main core competencies (researching, questioning, critical thinking, problem solving, decision making, and computational competencies) of our students. The use of personal smart devices has increased considerably in the past few years (not only at university level, but also in the secondary or primary schools.).

The rich set of built-in sensors in the smart phones represent an excellent opportunity for using the own devices not only for searching and talking, but also for real physics experiments [1]. Many researchers used M-learning for different purposes, but only a few of them used it for physics teaching experiments. However, to achieve real success also free applications and teachers’ (instructors) expertise is required besides the devices themselves.

If we want to let our students leave universities with an adequate knowledge and with applicable skills in physics, we should take the advantage of the ICT, multimedia and M-learning devices (laptops, smart phones, tablets) and their applications [2; 3; 4].

The activities and resources that will be presented have been developed and tested with students enrolled to Physics course, who are studying for BSc in Computer (IT) Engineering or BA in Business Administration and Management. Students enrolled in the course have brought their personally owned devices (laptops, tablets, and smart phones) and used them for the activities described.

Making anonymous personal interviews with the students (based by action research), I could conclude that students who participated in these lectures enjoyed the use of informal cooperative learning method very much. They really liked to cooperate with their neighbours during the classes: „Turn To Your Neighbours” (Mazur, et all, 2013).
