“European Open Science Cloud”: An Advantage for Researchers and Students

Ludovica Paseri, University of Turin (Italy)

Abstract

Since 2016 [1], the European institutions have been carrying out the construction of a “European Open Science Cloud” (EOSC), an ambitious project for European universities and research centers, which will bring benefits in particular to researchers and students, fostering research and innovation in Europe. EOSC does not aim at the construction of a traditional cloud infrastructure: it aims, rather, to outline an environment that coordinates the Open Science [2] projects, implemented in recent years, to facilitate the sharing of scientific research both in terms of raw research data and in terms of research results, namely publications [3].
This project has two particularly interesting aspects.
First, it is closely linked with the Open Access strategies, aimed at widening access to knowledge as much as possible, thanks to policies agreed between universities, national governments and European authorities [4].
Secondly, the EOSC project has a notable impact on the method of access to European funding, since in order to obtain these funds it is necessary to ensure that the production of the data collected for research purposes will be FAIR [5]: acronym that stands for findable, accessible, interoperable and reusable data.
This paper aims to provide an overview of the state of the art of the EOSC project, which is currently being implemented [6], with the aim of analyzing the benefits as well as its most problematic aspects for researchers and examine how it can represent the basis for the introduction of a new educational strategy for students.

Keywords: Open Science; Open Access; European funding; research.
