New Perspectives in Science Education

National Technical University of Ukraine “Igor Sikorsky Kyiv Polytechnic Institute” trains specialists in 42 fields of study and 168 program subject areas [1]. There are 18 faculties, 9 educational and research institutions [2]. The teaching staff of the Department of History teach students of all mentioned faculties [3]. The aim of my paper is to sum up the experience of this department in advancing the students’ skills in history by the use of various extra curricula activities. I examined the pedagogical practices of my 25 colleagues at various faculties and my own assistant’s and lecturer’s practice (since 2010) at 15 faculties. The main questions were: 1) how to organize visits of the students to various museums under time pressure and underfunding; 2) how to produce the in-person or virtual discussion of these visits; 3) how to prepare the students for the youth conference “Ukraine: History, Culture, Memory” [4] or for other conferences and contests on history; 4) how the participation in the “History Club” enhances knowledge about history in general. It is possible to argue that all mentioned extra curricula activities help to hold the interest of the unspecialized students in historical academic subjects.
