Assessment of the Least Learned Competency in Chemistry: Development, Validation, and Testing the Effectiveness of a Contextualized Strategic Intervention Material in the Learners’ Mastery Level

Sedrick Paras, Department of education (Philippines)

Abstract

This research was conducted to assess the least learned competency in Chemistry 7 and to prepare, validate and test the effectiveness of a Contextualized Strategic Intervention Material (CSIM) in the Learners’ Mastery Level in Chemistry among the grade seven students in one of the public schools in Angeles City, Pampanga of the school year 2019-2020.
The study utilized a descriptive, methodological, and quasi-experimental design. The 64 grade seven participants were grouped into the control group and experimental group in no random assignment and attended a remediation class. The tally sheet from the consolidated item analysis from the first quarter exam in Chemistry, a tally sheet of DepEd’s LRMDS validation tool for CSIM, and data record of the achievement test were the instruments used in gathering data. Frequency distribution, percentage distribution, weighted mean, standard deviation, and t-tests were used in the statistical analysis of data.
Findings revealed that the least learned competency in Chemistry 7 was investigated properties of acidic and basic mixtures using natural indicators. It was found out that the traditional method of teaching supplemented by CSIM can significantly improve the learner’s mastery level in Chemistry. The students transitioned from “near mastery level” to “mastery level” after the utilization of the CSIM. It was recommended that teachers must adopt and utilize a CSIM as an intervention material in teaching Chemistry as well as in other subjects to increase learner’s mastery level.
