Toshiyuki ‘Max’ Misu is a professor and assistant director at the Global Career Design Centre, Hiroshima University, with a specific expertise in science and technology (S&T) human resource policy.
Max received his PhD degree in physics from the University of Tennessee in 1997. Since then, he has been working in a wide variety of R&D activities, ranging from academic theoretical/computational physics and accelerator physics for cancer therapy to S&T policy.
As a senior researcher at the National Institute of Science and Technology Policy under the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology, Max developed the survey methodology and implemented full-scale surveys for the first time in Japan to clarify the employment conditions and career paths of postdoctoral researchers and recent doctoral graduates. His survey results were briefly summarised in Nature articles: Nature 451, 742 (6 February 2008); Nature 458, 1062 (22 April 2009). He then extended his work as a senior analyst at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development where he carried out comparative studies on the careers of doctorate holders from October 2010 to January 2013.
Since April 2014, Max has been supporting career and skills development for early career researchers and managing the programme for the industry-government-academia consortium led by Hiroshima University: the Home for Innovative Researchers and Academic Knowledge Users (HIRAKU).
Max has also been involved in various judging and advisory committees for government funded programmes and surveys, mainly related to S&T researchers in Japan.
The recently published book The Science and Technology Labor Force: The Value of Doctorate Holders and Development of Professional Careers (Springer International Publishing, 2016) includes some of Max’s main research papers in the sections ‘Doctorate holders’ labor market and mobility: The academic career as the first choice’ and ‘Domestic and international destinations of Japan’s doctorate holders’.
