Dr. John Solomon Maninang is an assistant professor at the University of Tokyo. He is currently the assistant coordinator of the ALESS (Active Learning of English for Science Students) program of the university’s Center for Global Communication Strategies. With his Ph.D. degree in food biochemistry, he teaches courses on Food Safety & Globalization and Evolution of Human Nutrition in addition to the science-focused writing and academic communication classes he handles. His research interests are in the safety and health aspects of food, and in plant-plant interactions (allelopathy). In terms of research on pedagogy, he is the principal investigator of a program-wide research on the trajectory of student motivation in an academic writing class for science-track students in the University of Tokyo.
