Loukia Demetriou was born in Athens, Greece in 1961. She received her B.Sc. (1979/83), M.Sc. (1983/85) and Ph.D. in Psychology (1988) from the University of Cologne, Germany while working there as a Research Assistant (1984-1986) and later as Doctoral Fellow (1986-88). She taught Psychology as an Adjunct Assistant Prof. at the University of Trenton, N.J. (1990-1993) and Developmental Psychology for the State University of New York – Empire State College (1990-1994).
Since 2007 she has tenure as an Associate Professor first in the Department of Social Sciences and Education of Frederick University. She is the academic supervisor of the undergraduate B.Sc. Psychology program and teaches Developmental Psychology, Professional Ethics, Cross Cultural Social Psychology in the same program. She is also the Academic Supervisor of the MA program in Counseling and Professional Guidance where she teaches Theories of Individual Counseling, Professional Ethics, Resiliency and Theories of Professional Development.
She was Chairman of the Department of Pre Primary Education from 2007-2008 and from 2008 – 2011 she chaired the Department of Education. Currently she is Vice Dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences and Member of the Board of Frederick University. She is the author of the book “The first 6 years of life» published by Pedio, Athens (2015, 8th edition) and co-author of the book “Antisocial Behaviour in the Cypriot Youth, Racistic Tendencies”, published by Savvoulas (2005). She has participated in funded research projects in Cyprus and abroad and has a number of journal publications and participations in international conferences. Her research interests lie in Developmental Psychology, Socialization and the Parental Acceptance – Rejection Theory in Cross-Cultural Perspective and Counseling, Resiliency in Youth in times of socioeconomic crisis.
