Janelle M. Johnson is the co-editor of STEM21: Equity in Teaching and Learning to Meet Global Challenges of Standards, Engagement, & Transformation (2018), and the Principal Investigator on two National Science Foundation grants— A Community-based Approach to Engaging Students and Teachers in Effective STEM Education (with GLOBE), and Inclusive STEM Teaching Preparation at an Urban Commuter University. Her focus is professional development for interdisciplinary and inclusive STEM teaching and learning, helping teachers develop non-deficit lenses while centering the needs of students who are less engaged with science. She leads an equity-based professional development methodology utilizing participant observation. She taught Math and Earth Science to multilingual students in Guatemala and Arizona for 8 years in primary and secondary, and her dissertation research examines the outcomes of cross border professional development with Indigenous teachers in Guatemala and Mexico.
