Peter Swift is an Assistant Professor (Teaching) in the Department of Physics, at Durham University, UK and also Vice-Master of Grey College.
Peter graduated with first class honours in Mathematics and Physics from Durham University. He then undertook a PhD under the supervision of Prof. Martyn Chamberlain and sponsored by HMGCC in the terahertz group at Durham, which he completed in 2008. He then worked for a University spin-out company, Durham Photonics Ltd, which was looking to develop terahertz instrumentation, and then as a post-doctoral researcher on the ROBUST project (Regeneration Of Brownfield Using Sustainable Technology), investigating the applicability of terahertz radiation as a sensor for organic molecules. Since October 2011, Peter has held a teaching position in the Department of Physics, currently as an Assistant Professor (Teaching). Since January 2014, he has held this jointly with the position of Vice-Master of Grey College.
At Durham, Peter amongst others teaches the core Thermodynamics and Introduction to Statistical Physics Course, Co-leads the Level 1 Laboratories, where he also demonstrates and sits on the Department’s Education Committee. He is particularly interested in supporting student access to University, and runs the Department of Physics Summer Schools for gifted and talented sixth form school students. At Grey College, Peter has overall responsibility for the Wider Student Experience, and the student enrichment agenda.
