Mary Oliver

Mary is the Associate Professor of Science Education at the University of Nottingham. She has worked as a teacher, researcher and university lecturer.

Mary graduated in Biochemistry from the Open University, as a teacher from the University of London and a PhD from the School of Chemistry from the University of East Anglia. She has taught in Bristol, Norwich, (UK), Copenhagen, Denmark and Perth, Australia, before taking up a research position at UWA, Australia. I have worked with pre-service science teachers in Australia and was Director of the Australian Biology Olympiad for several years, serving on the Steering Committee of the International Biology Olympiad.

She has worked with colleagues implementing education interventions (CASE), outreach projects and supporting the mentoring of early career teachers of mathematics and science. Mary became interested in exploring the PISA data, initially in Australia and then more widely.

This study has been funded by the Nuffield Foundation, (UK) and addresses questions about associations between the PISA measures of scientific literacy and national examinations as well as teaching strategies, affective measures and aspirations.
