New Perspectives in Science Education

Conor McCrossan worked on the Horizon 2020 project called ResponSEAble. The purpose of the project was focused on connecting people to the ocean and helping them to better understand the complex human-ocean relationship. His involvement in the project included research into how best to educate people about the human-ocean relationship, the measurement of ocean literacy, and the measurement of the effectiveness of ocean literacy tools and initiatives. He also worked on the design, development, and implementation of the ocean literacy tools. He has a Bachelor of Engineering degree in Software Engineering, a Masters in Applied Science (Enterprise Systems), a Higher Diploma in Software Design and Development, and he is currently a PhD candidate in the final stages of his PhD.

Previously, Conor worked in the telecommunications software industry to the level of a senior software engineer. He worked in 6 different software companies over the course of 10 years and his experience is mainly in web-based Java and C/C++. The companies he has worked for include Nortel Networks, Ericsson and Eircom. As a senior software engineer he was responsible for the design, implementation, test and deployment of new features on embedded C/C++ systems and enterprise level Java web applications. During his time in Tango Telecom Ltd he worked on a web based system which interacts with Tango’s SMS system to allow operators, support personnel and management to monitor, configure and maintain an SMS system which handles millions of short messages on a daily basis.
